Floating Coats - Atlanta-Decatur GA based purveyors of fine tunes since 1998 - present "Tunes By The Ton." This ongoing podcast documents the good, the stellar and the surreal collected from a mountainous archive of live, practice, and "guerilla" recordings. We will trace the many iterations and line-ups of the band: from our beginnings in rock 'n roll devilry, to tradish-acoustic string band, and all the (mild-mannered) madness that has blended the two ever since. Continue to tune in as we assemble episodes from the deep and modern past, and shovel it all online ... We post a new episode the 1st and 15th of every month. Subscribe! Enjoy! Stay tuned!

"AN" HISTORY OF THE COATS | The mild-mannered madness thru the years ...

FLOATING COATS "Gold Days" (2005 - 2011) : The Coats of the late aughts / early teens began their fearless hi-jinx in late 2005. Trading in the tired title of power trio for the wired title of "power quartet," the Coats in one fell swoop, re-introduced drums, added Dave Goldberg, and in so doing: a songwriting machine, a harmonica, and - AND - a cowbell. But then, such audacity is just what one would expect from the boys. It proved just the thing to guide them boldly through the Coats' "golden era."

FLOATING COATS "Go Blendo" (2004-2005): By late 2004, the Coats realized they couldn't keep "demon" electricity down indefinitely. A line-up change produced the first Coats "power trio." Sporting upright bass, acoustic and electric guitars (and, the occasional ukulele), the new "blend" took Prog / Trad up a notch. 2004 alone produced a double album's worth of new material, while 2005 saw the addition of new regular venues: The Red Light and Decatur CD. It was once said of the Coats, "who else can play the Carter Family and the Pixies in the same set?" No one but the Coats during the "Blendo Years" had that kind of gumption. And what gumption it was.

FLOATING COATS "The Prog / Trad Days" (2003-2004): This phase traces the unlikely, often unwieldy, transformation made by the Coats from the rock mayhem of MOJO to acoustic (yes, acoustic) string band. Minus drums, adding a mandolin and pulling the plug on "demon" electricity altogether, the Coats navigated the unpredictable waters residing between old-time traditionals, tin pan alley swing and modern anthems, all in support of originals galore. The two-year 2003-2004 acoustic "experiment" blended progressive with traditional. It would go down in Coats lore as "Prog / Trad."

MOJO JOJO (1998-2002): Many moons ago, it all began ... the band's original incarnation as "rock band extraordinaire," MOJO JOJO. Okay, their first incarnation was as a KINKS cover band. ("To the brothers, Davies!") MOJO was officially the second incarnation. From 1998-2002 (with a very brief reunion in 2004), MOJO plied the ATL warehouse party / club circuit leaving euphoria and ringing ears in their wake. Underground legends in their own mind, the scene couldn't help but root for the band whose only stated ambition was: "hey, maybe we could open for other bands."
